Electrophysiology and Ionic Channels

Instructor:
Vincent Torre

Amount of frontal teaching:
15 hours

The basic methods and techniques of electrical recordings, voltage and current clamp mode, will be illustrated. These topics will include:

-        analysis of voltage clamp recordings;

-        analog to digital conversion;

-        the use of specific channel blockers;

-        various technical tips and recommendations.

The main emphasis of these initial lectures will be devoted to provide technical support to the experimental activities of PhD students involved in electrophysiology.

After these initial lectures, we will review the structure of several ionic channels and we will examine the relation between their structure and function. In particular we will discuss:

-       gating;

-       ionic selectivity;

-       evolution.
